Van Woert Genealogy

Note: I am no longer building the database from information in Dr. Van Woert’s manuscript. I will however, be more than happy to look up information in the manuscript on a per request basis and at no charge. Generally speaking, I have at least some information on every Van Woert listed in the index. I intend to continue adding photos, obituaries, and biographical information. To request a look-up or to submit photos, obituaries, or biographical information, please email me. Mary Van Woert Cheyne

Dedication

This webpage is dedicated to Irving Van Woert, M.D., compiler of Van Woert Genealogy, in great appreciation for his labor of love, without which many Van Woerts would find it extremely difficult to trace their roots.

Information Source

This genealogy of Teunis Jacobsen Van Schoenderwoerdt was taken primarily from the manuscript of Irving Van Woert M.D. (1890-1974), held in the New York State Library, but available on microfilm through Inter-Library Loan. Irving Van Woert’s research turned up descendants using three variant surnames: Van Woert, Van Wert, and Van Woeart. I have been told that some Van Wart lines also descended from Teunis, but Dr. Van Woert did not mention or include any in his work on Teunis’ descendants. He did, however, include over 400 pages of genealogical information on unrelated Van Wart, Van Wert, Van Weert, Van Waert, and Jochems (Joachimse, Jochemszen), gathered during the search for his roots. This information is also included on the microfilm..

Family Background

Teunis Van Schoenderwoerdt came to America in 1640, preceded by his brother, Rutger Van Schoenderwoerdt, in 1636. The descendants of Teunis assumed the surname Van Woert and settled in the Albany (Beverwyck), New York area. He married Sara Denys, of England, on April 19, 1650, and fathered at least one son, Jacob, from whom many of the Van Woerts have descended.

Rutger’s descendants assumed the surname Rutger, and settled in the New York City (New Amsterdam) area. It is his descendant, Henry Rutgers, of Revolutionary War fame, for whom “Rutgers - The State University of New Jersey” has been named.
